Fishtown is North of Northern Liberties and is directly Northeast of Center City. The name
comes from the fact that several of 18th and early 19th century German & German-American families bought up the fishing rights on both sides of the Delaware River in this section of the city. Fishtown is a historically working class North Philadelphia
neighborhood right off the waterfront that has, in recent years, experienced a growth of posh renovated row homes and other trendy establishments.
